Citizenship

UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP

Adopted by choice as a citizen
Of these United States of America,

I believe: not that in the land
Of Liberty all persons now are free,
But that the dream of freedom
Here prevails in spite of odds,
That though the law be freed
Of prejudice, not all hearts are,
And yet the dream of equality
Here overcomes the tribal gods.
I believe the day is coming
When sisterhood will be the equal
Of brotherhood under law
And we will say American
Of all the seeds from all the pods
Of these united peoples of America.
This is our land,
And my understanding of it:
Did I get it right?
Then we must make it so.
